Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on December 11, 2008 |
The Big Brothers Big Sisters School Based Mentoring Program serves children between the ages of five and fifteen who are currently attending school. These children are identified by school personnel and are considered likely to benefit from a one-on-one relationship with a mentor. Mentors spend time with a child on a weekly basis at the child's school, in most cases for only 30 minutes to an hour. For some children, the focus is mainly academics. For others, there may be a wider range of activities, possibly including sports, art or craft projects, computer activities, games, or other special school projects. Interested volunteers should call the Big Brothers Big Sisters Office at D.A. Blodgett for Children at 451-2021. The screening process includes a written application, personal interview, two references, and a police check. Individual training is provided to volunteers at the time of the interview. Volunteer applicants should be at least high school age, emotionally stable and mature and should commit to seeing a child on a weekly basis. Volunteers should also have a means of getting to the child's school. This opportunity is sponsored by: Big Brothers Big Sisters Of Greater Grand Rapids

Overall Experience

A chance to be a kid again while helping a youth in need
 |
I have met two very special young people through this program. I have been able to share things that I enjoy (hockey games, Jersey Junction, the library) while trying new things together (building a rocket and trips to Craig's Cruisers)
I know that I have made a difference and I look forward to watching these youth grow into adults. posted by Janelle Burden on April 11, 2005 |
