FACTS Still Needs Reading Mentors

Active Nov 6, 2003 to Dec 6, 2003
Shalinda now loves reading because of her FACTS volunteer. Once unwilling to try, Shalinda is now eager to read. Her mentor sees constant improvement. Students learn to read in grades 1 - 3 and read to learn in grades 4 and above. Students need to read well to succeed in all other subjects. Because of her FACTS mentor, Shalinda will keep up with her classmates and not fall behind. FACTS volunteers work in the HOSTS Reading program in one of 20 Grand Rapids Public School elementary schools. Each volunteer spends 1/2 hour a week helping a 1 - 3 grade student learn to read. All materials and lesson plans are provided for the mentor. A GRPS staff member is in attendance at all sessions
Over 1700 volunteers have signed up and been trained as FACTS volunteers making this the largest sustained volunteer program in the history of the GRPS. HOWEVER, our goal is 4,000 mentors. Give the gift of time to a child who needs help to read and needs a friend. Call 632-1002 for more information.
