Providing a Win/Win Partnership

Active Jan 15, 2004 to Feb 15, 2004
Traveling Grannies/Grandpas Program is a community-based program that provides a collaborative partnership with schools and community organizations to help enhance youth and family development by supporting intergenerational programming that builds relationships between seniors and youth. The program provides adults 60 years and older with a stipend for their services as mentors/tutors for youth ages 6 to 19. These at-risk youth are referred to the program by schools, courts, police and community agencies. The youth receive individualized and small-group mentoring in the school and/or while participating in after-school activities, as well as in their own homes. The mentors support the youth with their schoolwork, help them address behavioral problems, promote self-esteem, and discuss problems and concerns which may lead to substance abuse or crimminal behavior. Mentors also provide guidance on how to make positive lifestyle choices and help the youth approach conflict in a positive and productive manner. The object of this program is to promote educational, social, and emotional development of students. For more information contact Jeana Huff at 616-771-9748
