Relationship to QCHI: Affiliate Project
Project Description: Activate Quad Cities seeks to create a social and physical environment that encourages healthy lifestyles.
Target Audience: All residents of the Quad Cities.
Start Date/Current Status: Activate Quad Cities was inspired by the YMCA’s national effort “Activate America”. In the fall of 2006, the Two Rivers YMCA and the Scott County Family YMCA were selected as Pioneering Healthier Communities grant recipients. The grant funded the creation of a community coalition with representatives from the government, school, health care, corporate, faith-based and not-for profit sectors.
Project Goals and Objectives: Reduce obesity/overweight and associated health conditions. Increase physical activity through coordinated opportunities and programs. Encourage healthy eating through education and a supportive environment. Develop culturally sensitive materials and programs. Partner with and support other organizations with similar goals to improve wellness. Impact the costs related to obesity and inactivity. Advocate for policy changes that support healthy lifestyles. Develop a physically fit workforce to position the Quad Cities as a community of choice for new businesses.
Project Accomplishments: The coalition has established five project divisions: Government, Healthy Schools, Agency and Faith Based, Health Care and Corporate, Communications and Resource Development.
