Willmar Community Senior Network, A Living At Home/Block Nurse Program is a non-profit, that organizes volunteer assistance for elders 65+ within 5 miles of the Willmar area providing "whatever help is needed" for elders to stay at home safely and independently as long as possible.

Description:
Willmar Community Senior Network, A Living At Home/Block Nurse Program is a non-profit, community owned program that draws upon volunteers and professional services to provide information, social and support services to elders ages 65+ within 5 miles of the Willmar area. Our goal is to help our elders stay healthy while living in their own homes, avoiding early or unnecessary nursing home placement. The program also takes donations of medical equipment for those in need. Examples include walkers, wheelchairs, canes, etc., and loans them to seniors upon request.

History:
The Willmar Community Senior Network's Board of Directors from the Willmar, MN area opened the non-profit office mid-October 2008 with Sheri Nordmeyer, as Program Director. The first office location was downtown on 4th street in the Habicht Building. July 2009 the office moved to 200 4th Street, Suite 35, Willmar, MN 56201, (PO Box 1181). This first year as the program --one of almost 40 Living At Home/Block Nurse Programs across Minnesota--is launched, Nordmeyer and the board members are working to connect with other agencies, and to develop a base of trained volunteers who can help seniors with basic needs. Every month the program is growing in persons served and volunteers enrolled. The current volunteer coordinator, a part-time Experience Works trainee, began working in February 2009 to coordinate the requests for services and the volunteers. As more and more requests are coming in, more volunteers--both men and women--are needed.
