Agency Details:
The primary purpose of this corporation is to improve the quality of care for all Lancaster County consumers of mental health services by aiding in the development of a voluntary consumer self-help movement.
Description:
ICAN is a 100% consumer-run, voluntary mental health drop-in center. The board of directors, staff, and all members are people who receive or have received mental health services. ICAN provides social services to people with a history of mental illness who live in Lancaster County. Board members are elected through democratic elections and staff are hired by the board of directors.
The drop-in center is open Monday-Friday from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM and Saturdays from 1:00 - 5:00 PM. On Saturday nights we have a Coffee House from 7:00 - 11:00 PM. We also move people who live in Lancaster County who have a mental illness (within the county).
At the drop-in center members may use a variety of services that they may not have in their own homes, such as cable TV, a telephone, the newspaper, a washer and dryer, and a kitchen. Staff, who are also mental health consumers, are available to provide peer support and advocacy.

I felt rewarded in the sense that I truly felt as if I made connections there and for me that was a growing experience in many ways.
