Habitat For Humanity Detroit

Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with God's people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which people can live and grow into all that God intended.

Description:
Habitat for Humanity Detroit provides a "hand up", not a "hand out" to families in need in the city of Detroit.

We offer our partner families an opportunity to help themselves, to own a decent, affordable home of their own, which they pay for and maintain.Partner families invest hundreds of hours of "sweat equity" into building their homes and the homes of others. The houses are sold at no profit and with no interest charged. Mortgage payments are placed in a fund used to finance additional houses.

Volunteers provide the labor, and individual, church, and corporate sponsors provide the money and materials to build Habitat houses.

In 2006 HFHD completed a five-year building plan in Core City Neighborhoods on the near-Westside of Detroit, just west of the old Tiger Stadium. With the support of applicant families in need, individuals, area church members, businesses, civic organizations and schools, we build 110 homes in Core City. Our target community for building in 2007 is in the MorningSide Community on the eastside of Detroit near Mack Ave. & Alter Road.

Our goal is to improve the physical condition of the neighborhood as well as the social conditions of the residents. In addition to building new homes in the Core Cities neighborhood, we are currently working on securing funding to:

provide current residents with home repair programs, and rehabilitate substandard houses that can be salvaged for resale to new families moving into the area.
