OUR MISSION
The Mission of Math*STARS Afterschool Program is to provide a safe space for Boston urban youth to excel in mathematics and reading, and to develop strength and creativity to promote their own resiliency. With the services and support provided by MathPOWER-trained tutors, Math*STARS offers a unique out-of-school time experience for students in grades 6-9 by providing one-on-one tutoring, weekly skills-building workshops, and peer mentoring and guidance.
MathPOWER partners with two renowned organizations to provide the best possible experiences to our Math*STARS youth:
Sportsmen’s Tennis Club in Dorchester, a valued and respected community center founded in 1961; and Yawkey Boys & Girls Club of Roxbury, named 2009 Science Club of the Year by United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley.
Math*STARS Afterschool Program plays a crucial role in ensuring Boston urban youth have the academic skills, confidence, and self-efficacy to thrive in middle- and high-school, and successfully navigate into higher education.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Volunteers at Math*STARS are champions.
They are leaders, tutors, role models and mentors for the youth who participate in our afterschool program. Volunteers work one-on-one with students on their homework and help students prepare for tests/quizzes. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one day a week from Monday-Thursday, and must pass a CORI check.
While prior tutoring experience is not necessary, volunteers must have an interest in working with and mentoring youth. Volunteers tutor students in all subjects, but proficiency in Algebra 1 is very important. Volunteers are supported throughout the year by monthly dinner-workshops, informal and scheduled check-ins with the site director, and an online network of fellow tutors and resources.
