Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on November 10, 2009

Ever wanted to go on a stakeout? Are you a night owl? Want to make life easier for some local animals in dire need?

Then this is the volunteer opportunity for you!!

There is a particularly large colony of feral (free-roaming)cats that Four-Legged Friends needs help trapping to spay/neuter and vaccinate. The colony is located in the greater Rochester area.

We are currently coordinating for small groups to set and monitor traps on an ongoing basis throughout the months of November and December.

Once cats are caught, they will be transported to local veterinarians and spay/neuter clinics, where they will be neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped for identification, then returned to the colony.

Training is required for this volunteer opportunity. Training will take place at Four-Legged Friends shelter, 1694 Penfield Road. The actual event will take place at the colony location in the suburbs of Rochester.

Time commitment: 4 hours minimum to 16 hours maximum per day(that is, you must commit to at least 4 hours, but if you can stick it out till your traps are full...) Trapping is not difficult but it can be time-consuming!

Ideally, trapping begins between the hours of 4 and 6 pm and ends when the traps are full or at daybreak, whichever comes first. Overnight stakeouts are common -- you will never be scheduled alone. Snacks and caffeinated beverages provided!

This is a perfect opportunity for college students who need community service credits or just want to enhance their resume with volunteer activities. You can bring your friends along and make a night of it!

This opportunity is limited to people over the age of 18.

A vehicle is required as you will wait in the vehicle while trapping. If you do not have a vehicle, we will match you up with another volunteer who does.

Training is required and consists of a short presentation on feral (free-roaming) cats and a demonstration of how to set a humane trap, where to set a humane trap, and what to do once a cat is caught in the trap. Total training time approx. 1-1/2 hours.

This opportunity is sponsored by: Four-Legged Friends Animal Adoptions, Inc.
