Agency Details:
Conexión Comunidad
Conexión Comunidad services the Latino and community-at-large by offering information, education, resources and classes at 637 N. 11th St..
Description:
Offerings at Conexión vary, but children have always been one of the primary concerns. The after-school/homework program is the longest running continuous program and now serves about 20-25 students a day from Littlejohn School for homework help offered by NIU Honors students. We hope to expand this program and build stronger ties with Littlejohn School. Kishwaukee College has been a partner and offers ESL and English on Computers classes and Rock Valley College offers Citizenship classes. Conexión has hosted an annual Fiesta every September to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day on the 16th and it is our invitation to the community to join us for family activities and to learn about our heritage.
History:
Conexión Comunidad began as a group of dedicated Latinos who wanted to provide resources for their own community and help integrate with the community-at-large. They were able to purchase a building located at 637 N. 11th St. in DeKalb in 2001 and that serves as the home of their activities. Conexión is run by a Board of Directors and is a recognized 501-c-3 organization.
