The Crisis Response Team is a great team to be a part of. Team members have gone through Safe Passage's standard training program, followed by two-months of active volunteering and then attend another more in-depth crisis intervention training. Crisis Intervention is the process of intervening in a crisis to help a person return to his/her homeostasis. Homeostasis is the average range of emotions and stress that our bodies function within. When a person is in crisis, their emotions and stresses fluctuate. Members of the crisis response team are responsible for helping staff the Medical Advocacy and Crisis Hotline calendars. These calendars need staffing 24-hours a day. Members of this team provide a valuable community service; they help people in crisis. Unlike natural disasters or other public disasters, the type of crises that we work with occur in private. Often, because of the private nature of these crises, victims will hide their abuse and pain from friends and family. This can cause the abuse and pain to continue in secret for longer. However, having a crisis intervention advocate, whom the victim does not know and can trust to hold her story in confidence, can help a lot and possibly help the victim leave her situation earlier.
Volunteers must complete a 60-hour course. During this course, volunteers learn new listening and empathy skills; crisis intervention skills; the dynamics in a violent domestic relationship; how to assist victims of sexual assault/abuse; and how to recognize abusive behavior. Volunteers are expected to commit to at least one year of service. Volunteers are expected to attend ongoing trainings.
