Lancaster Museum of Art

The Lancaster Museum of Art is dedicated to fostering artistic expression and understanding by supporting and advancing the visual arts through exhibitions and education.

Description:
The Lancaster Museum of Art is a non-profit museum of contemporary art operating in downtown Lancaster, PA, since 1965.

Goals of the Museum are:

  • Expand and implement art education programming.
  • Increase community awareness of the museum and its mission.
  • Increase involvement and support of individuals and corporate donors.
  • Expand and maintain the permanent collection.
  • Improve the facilities of the Lancaster Museum of Art.

We provide a 4,000 square foot facility for the exhibition of contemporary art including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, ceramics, metals, printmaking, and other media. We serve local, regional, national, and international artists ranging from emerging to professional status. Our education program includes lectures by visual artists, artists-in-residency, studio classes for children and adults, and community outreach programs such as ArtsReach. Admission to the Museum is free.

History:
The Lancaster Museum of Art, founded in 1965 by a group of artists and community leaders, was initially located on the campus of Franklin & Marshall College and known as the Goethean Gallery. The organization relocated to a downtown location and became the Community Gallery of Lancaster County, moving in 1979 to its present location in the Grubb Mansion adjacent to Musser Park, which is owned by the City of Lancaster. The Community Gallery became the Lancaster Museum of Art in 1996. The Museum, approved as a Heritage Resource Site, is open to the public, free of charge, Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday Noon-4 p.m. and is handicapped accessible on the first floor.

The variety of programs and exhibitions we offer respond to the region's expanding and increasingly diverse audience that includes people of all ages, cultures, and educational and socio-economic backgrounds.

The Lancaster Museum of Art receives more than 30,000 annual visitors, who come to us primarily from the region surrounding Lancaster County, including Lebanon, York, Dauphin, Berks, and Chester counties, as well as Philadelphia and Maryland. Situated in a city which hosts the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, Franklin & Marshall College, Millersville University, Pennsylvania School of Crafts and numerous art galleries, we are fortunate to draw from a strong local base of artists, patrons of the arts, students, and educators. Through our educational outreach programs--including ArtsReach--we gain visibility in our local K-12 school systems, from which we draw educators, students, and their parents to the Museum. In a town with large Hispanic and African-American minorities, we make every effort to extend our reach into these communities as well. Finally, we reach a small national and international audience thanks to the many tourists who come to Lancaster County every year, attracted by its history and large Amish population.
