SouthEast Lancaster Health Services (SELHS) United Way Agency

Agency Details:

SouthEast Lancaster Health Services (SELHS)
Logo

The Mission of SouthEast Lancaster Health Services is to provide quality primary medical and dental care and patient health education to all members of our community.

Description:
SouthEast Lancaster Health Services is a Federally Qualified Community Health Center.

We are dedicated to eliminating all barriers to care as we strive to continuously improve the quality of life for the underserved. We have a sliding-fee scale based on family size and income.

To help us serve our patients better, we have many bilingual (English/Spanish) staff members. We also have evening and Saturday hours for the convenience of our patients.

History:
SELHS began in 1972 when the Free Clinic started as a part-time, walk-in clinic staffed by volunteers. The Free Clinic, which was located first on Strawberry Street, was later named the Lancaster Community Health Center and then the Spanish American Civic Association (SACA) Health Center.

A full-time, paid health center was established in the area at the same time to serve medically underserved people. This facility was named the Lancaster Neighborhood Health Center and was located on the 4th floor of the Lancaster Neighborhood Center, 630 Rockland Street.

The City of Lancaster was involved with both SACA Health Clinic and the Lancaster Neighborhood Health Center. These two separate health centers merged in December of 1980 to form SouthEast Lancaster Health Services, Inc. From 1980 until March 1996, SELHS was located on the fourth floor of the Lancaster Neighborhood Center building.

In 1987, SELHS started to explore options for expansion. The City of Lancaster donated land to the health center in 1994. Monetary donations were made by various federal, state, and local agencies as well as by members of the community and staff to fund construction of a free-standing health center.

In March of 1996, SELHS moved to its main location at 625 South Duke Street. The expansion provided much needed space for staff to provide more services for the increasing number of people seeking SELHS' medical and dental care.

The health center's main facility includes 14 medical exam rooms, 6 dental operatories as well as space for wellness programs, a locally-owned pharmacy, and a patient parking lot. In 2006 SELHS added a 6 medical exam room suite to Brightside Opportunities Center named "SouthEast at Brightside."
