The Volunteer Center has been an internal department of United Way of Lancaster County since 1989. It began as a pilot project of the Junior League in 1966 called the Volunteer Service Bureau. It was taken over by the Easter Seals Society in 1971 and merged with their new Information and Referral service (IRVS). In 1979 the VSB became independent of the Easter Seals Society. That year, the Lancaster County INformation Center was incorporated as a United Way agency. It operated its information/referral service and the renamed Volunteer Service Center with funding from United Way and Lancaster County Commissioners. In 1989 the Volunteer Center and LINC became direct services of United Way.
