Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lancaster County, Inc
The Mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to serve Lancaster County children by offering opportunities for professionally supported One-to-One® mentoring relationships with qualified volunteers. Each relationship will assist the Little Brother or Sister to become a confident, competent and caring individual.
Description:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lancaster County matches volunteers from the community with youth across the county. Youth are eligible for the program if they demonstrate a need for additional adult support and friendship in their lives, and are typically, but not solely, from single-parent homes. Girls ages 6-14 and boys ages 7-14 are eligible for intake; once a child is "matched" with a volunteer, he/she may remain matched until high school graduation or age 18. Our volunteers are individuals from all walks of life and are high schoolers through senior citizens! The agency provides professional caseworker support throughout the life of the match.
History:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lancaster County was founded in 1968 as an effort by the Lancaster Jaycees to provide mentoring services to boys from single-parent homes in Lancaster County. In the 1970's services were expanded to include programming for girls. The agency is affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, which is 100 years old in 2004.
