To make Allentown a Cleaner & Greener place to live & work. To improve the quality of life for all residents by reducing litter, graffiti and unkept properties. To reduce the quantity of trash being landfilled by promoting reuse and recycling efforts to residents and businesses.
Description:
The Recycling & Solid Waste Bureau is responsible for the following functions: providing trash and recycling collection to more than 36,000 households; operation of 1 recycling center and 2 yard waste sites; emptying more than 1000 litter baskets around the City; coordinating clean ups by neighborhood groups; providing cleaning supplies and disposal of collected litter and debris; educating and enforcing the trash, recycling, anti-graffiti and property maintenance laws by SWEEP officers; provide free removal of graffiti to property owners.

Neighborhood cleanups are year-round; volunteers also perform graffiti surveying and office support. The Recycling Drop Off Center is staffed by a supervisor and community service workers from various organizations. The Center is in need of dependable volunteers available Monday - Friday, from 7:00 or 8:00 a.m. until 12 noon or later. Schedules for volunteers are very flexible. |
