The Second Mile challenges young people to achieve their potential as individuals and community members by providing opportunities for them to develop positive life skills and self-esteem as well as by providing education and support for parents and professionals addressing the needs of youth.
Description:
The Second Mile's Philosophy of Service Early Intervention Opportunities for growth should occur as early as possible, through programs stressing prevention, early intervention, and education. Ongoing Commitment Services to youth emphasize the continuity and stability required for young people to achieve goals successfully and gain control over their destinies. Proactive and Volunteer-driven Volunteers are the lifeblood of The Second Mile and can make the difference in young people's lives by providing resources and by building supportive environments to nurture self-confidence and positive self-image. Networks & Cooperative Ventures Services and resources directed toward addressing young people's needs can be strengthened and maximized by actively networking, seeking partnerships, making appropriate referrals, and developing cooperative ventures with parents, foster parents, school counselors, and other youth service professionals. Private Support The mission of The Second Mile can most effectively be addressed and sustained by developing and nurturing private funding sources. We are looking for the commitment of local adults, individual students, and collegiate student organizations serving as key volunteers.

The Friend Program is designed to provide a context for school-aged youth to consistently engage and connect with positive adult role models. More specifically, this early intervention program pairs "College Friends," collegiate volunteers recruited by The Second Mile, with "Young Friends," K-6th grade students in need of additional support, to participate together in recreational and educational events. To promote the development of healthy self-esteem and personal responsibility, College Friend and Young Friend pairs work together on goals targeting academic and social success, with the Young Friends submitting documentation (i.e., report cards; information from parents, teachers, counselors, or the College Friends themselves; certificates) to verify their progress toward achieving such goals at year-end. The Second Mile Friend Program in Lehigh Valley The Friend Program operates one Sunday a month from 3pm-5pm at the Life Sports Center at Muhlenberg College.
