4-H empowers youth to reach their full potential working and learning in partnership with caring adults.
Description:
4-H provides non-formal education to boys and girls, ages 8-18, in a wide variety of project areas. Clubs provide opportunities for youth to make their own decisions through business meetings which they run and to make contributions to their communities through service projects they decide on and carry out. It is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. Volunteer club leaders are facilitators and mentors for youth. They provide guidance as youth learn new skills in decision-making and team work. Volunteers are expected to support public speaking opportunities for youth in the club. They also are expected to encourage youth to take advantage of opportunities to learn leadership skills. Volunteer club leaders often bring specific skills they want to share with youth. Skills may include interest and knowledge in cats, livestock, small pets, woodworking, electronics and electricity, hiking and wildlife/forestry, sewing or cooking/nutrition, dancing of any kind, theater/puppetry, or gardening. Any skill or interest of a volunteer is likely to interest some youths too.
