VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES – Sunday, November 22, 2009
ALLENTOWN STATE HOSPITAL – Make a difference in patients' lives by playing games and socializing Monday to Friday 3:30pm – 4:30pm and 6:30pm - 7:30pm. Someone also needed to monitor Visitor's Desk from 2:20pm – 4:05pm on Saturday and Sunday and weekdays from 6:20pm – 8:05pm. Volunteers must be 18 years or older. CENTER FOR ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE, Easton – Volunteers needed Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8am – 4pm and Tuesday and Thursday 8am-8pm to clean dog kennels and cat areas. Also landscaping and general maintenance opportunities exist. People to walk small dogs and socialize with cats needed, as well as people willing to take animals off-site Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday noon – 4pm, Tuesday and Thursday noon – 8pm, or Saturday 8am – 6 pm. PBS 39, Bethlehem – 1 to 2 volunteers needed to help with Scholastic Scrimmage set December 8th, 9th, and 10th from 9:30am – 1:00pm. Volunteers will assist with the buzzer and/or scoring. PHOEBE HOME NURSING & REHABILIATATION CENTER, Allentown – needs volunteers to escort residents to outside medical appointments Monday – Friday 8am – 4pm (transportation provided). In-house transporters (either individual or group) are needed for getting residents to Sunday worship (1:15pm – 3:30pm) and for escorting residents to/from barber/beauty shop daily. Volunteers also needed to take care for birds daily. Orientation offered at various times. Volunteers must be a minimum of 13 years of age and completed 7th grade. LUKE'S HOSPITAL, Allentown – Meet people and develop new relationships by being a Gift Shop Volunteer in our beautiful, brand new gift shop. Duties include assisting customers select merchandise for purchasing, using cash register, helping to straighten and restock merchandise. Times are from 4pm – 7pm Mondays, Tuesdays, or Fridays. SENIOR CORPS RSVP, Allentown – Medicare Fraud Educator needed to help identify and educate consumers about Medicare and Medicaid abuse and fraud. WDIY-FM, Bethlehem – The Lehigh Valley's community public radio station and NPR affiliate WDIY-FM is seeking candidates for nomination to its Board of Directors. FEED THE ANIMALS, Easton - The Center for Animal Health and Welfareprovides shelter, healthcare and adoption services urgently needs wet cat food and cat litter, but also needs dry cat and dog food, kitten formula and new cat and dog toys. BABY BANK – babies use an average of 12 diapers a day. Some parents can't afford 2. Help provide babies with basic supplies and donate diapers, wipes, ointment, formula or baby food. HOLIDAY HOPE CHESTS, Bethlehem – the volunteer center of the Lehigh Valley connects volunteers with needs and opportunities in the Lehigh Valley is coordinating Holiday Hope Chests – a shoebox filled with age appropriate items for less fortunate Lehigh Valley children. PBS 39, Bethlehem – PBS is looking for volunteers to help answer phones and take pledges during their December pledge drive. They need 5 volunteers per shift; either groups or individuals can sign up! These breaks will NOT be live on-air or televised at any point. LEHIGH COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY (EMA) seeks volunteers – both medical and non-medical staff, to assist at upcoming vaccination clinics. Non-medical volunteers will be tasked with jobs such as: line staff (directing individuals), registration, break-room, supplies, runners and traffic control. HISTORIC BETHLEHEM PARTNERSHIP, Bethlehem – Help prepare for their 7th annual Turkey Trot 5K and Fitness Walk! It takes place November 28 in beautiful downtown Bethlehem. MILLER KEYSTONE BLOOD CENTER, Lehigh Valley – Locations throughout the LehighValley are looking for Canteen Attendants to serve donors after their life saving donation. They offer various fixed site opportunities as well as mobile sites throughout the area. Babysitting openings also in Bethlehem. Mornings, afternoons or evenings available. Times depend on location. LEHIGH VALLEY HOSPICE, Allentown – Be a front desk partner, assist with errands or be a patient companion. Front Desk partner - office experience needed. Individuals help greet visitors, answer phones, and perform other clerical tasks. Applicant must make time commitment, be customer service oriented and have excellent organizational skills. Assist with Errands – volunteers play a significant role in assisting patients and families with running errands such as grocery shopping or making deliveries. Patient Companion – roles of a companion can be reading, listening, talking or simply the gift of presence. Can be weekly or on an as needed basis.

LEHIGH VALLEY SCORE is seeking experienced business people to offer counseling and advice to those starting up small businesses and non-profit organizations. Volunteer counselors may present workshops and seminars at group meetings, assist with on-line counseling, or offer management and marketing advice. Other volunteers choose to become involved in the administrative process assisting other counselors. New volunteers will work with experienced counselors to become acquainted with the process. FLINT HILL FARMS, Coopersburg – Roofing/carpenter skills needed! Roof 1/3 done. The EducationalCenter produces wonderful cheese and butter from the milk of 3 Jersey cows, but the roof leaks over their run-in area.
