Novato Independent Elders is looking for volunteers to help frail, low-income seniors with their yardwork Groups Families

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on August 12, 2009

The Novato Independent Elders (NIEP) is looking for volunteers to help elderly people with their overgrown yards. The program is seasonal and operates Monday through Friday from mid-March through late October - early-November. NIEP is located at Margaret Todd Senior Center in Novato, but volunteers will be working at seniors homes located within Novato. Projects will be scheduled based on your availability.

To qualify a senior must have a health problem that limits their ability to do the work themselves, and be financially unable to hire someone to do the work for them.

Having a clean and tidy yardwork can mean a great deal to this person: it discourages complaints from neighbors, encourages pride of ownership, provides personal contact, and can alert us to the fact that the senior is in need of additional help.

The work is satisfying and rewarding. Many volunteers return year after year to help again.

Volunteers must have a car and be able to drive to the site themselves. Yardwork tools are helpful. They should enjoy working the elderly and be physically able to do yardwork.
