History:
Historic New England / The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities is a nonprofit 501(C)(3) Massachusetts corporation, founded in 1910 by William Sumner Appleton to preserve "buildings, places and objects of historic and other interest." Building on the success of its most recent long-range plan, in 1999 Historic New England began a major planning effort to prepare the institution for its centennial in 2010. Through the planning process, the staff fully realized that Historic New England’s remarkable collections are held in public trust, and that the overarching goal for the organization should be to reach a much larger audience. Historic New England’s founder, William Sumner Appleton, would be very pleased.
