Agency Details:
African Community Health Initiatives
The African Community Health Initiatives (ACHI) is a non-profit organization that seeks to support and improve the health and healthcare delivery of Sub-Saharan Africans in Massachusetts.
Description:
ACHI's mission to promote access to quality, culturally competent health and social services to Africans in Massachusetts is attained through three main avenues: education, research and community partnerships.
History:
ACHI, originally known as the African Health Initiative (AHI), was formed in 2000 in response to the emerging health needs among the immigrant sub-Saharan African community in Massachusetts. Up until 2006, ACHI was housed at the Multicultural AIDS Coalition (MAC) offices. During this period, the health concern that was primarily addressed was the HIV/AIDS issue. ACHI now has its own office space and has broadened its focus to include all health issues plaguing African immigrants in Massachusetts. In addition to connecting people with health and social services, ACHI also enrolls people in health insurance programs and helps them maintain coverage. ACHI has also increased the number of partnerships it has with health providers and service agencies that are frequently utilized by Africans. ACHI continues to actively procure more clients and partnerships in order to achieve its objective of catering to and creating a more healthy African community in Massachusetts.
