Our Mission: The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society is committed to promoting a Humane Community by providing the best possible care for stray, abandoned and abused animals.

Description:
Or services include:
Animal Intake & Adoption ~ Our chief purpose is to reunite lost animals with their owners and find new adoptive families for our community's abandoned or neglect animals and to provide compassionate, comfortable care for them in the interim.
Community Spay/Neuter Program ~ we provide vouchers to low-income families to help them off-set the cost of the spaying/neutering of their pets.
Humane Education Program ~ We have 2 staff members trained as Youth Humane Educators and deliver education on responsible pet ownership and humane treatment of animals to school children.
Temporary Shelter Partnerships ~ Through partnerships with the Abused Woman's Advocacy Project, Central Maine Medical Center and St. Mary's Regional Hospital; we provide free, temporary, short term care and housing for the pets of victims of domestic violence and hospital patients.
Developmentally Disabled/Disadvantaged Volunteer Programs ~ We offer persons with disabilities the opportunity to gain confidence, develop social skills and achieve a satisfaction by being part of the Shelter Experience.
Special Pets for Seniors ~ All senior pets (age 5 and up) that come in already spayed/neutered are adopted out to seniors (over the age of 55) at no cost.
Temperament Testing ~ Behavioral evaluations are an integral part of our adoptions. In our efforts to ensure that each dog/cat is placed in an appropriate environment, each dog/cat is closely evaluated when it arrives at the Shelter.

History:
The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society (formerly known as the Lewiston-Auburn S.P.C.A) was incorporated as a volunteer organization in 1885. Our 1st President was the Honorable Nelson M. Dingley, Jr., founder of the Lewiston Daily Journal (now known as the 'Sun Journal'), a former Governor of Maine and US Congressman. The Society's original mission was to protect work horses and children from abuse.
We continued to function primarily as an advocate for animal rights and welfare until 1972 when we built our first animal shelter on Hotel Road in Auburn. In January of 2007 we moved into our new facility at 55 Strawberry Avenue in Lewiston.
