" A world where everyone has a decent place to live "

Description:
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor, Inc. is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a non-profit housing organization.

Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with local people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses are then sold to qualifying families at no profit and with no interest charged, allowing many to enjoy the pride and dignity of home-ownership.

Without Habitat for Humanity's program, these families might not otherwise be able to own a home through traditional means.

***Volunteers are the backbone of Habitat for Humanity, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses.

History:
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor
FACTS

**The median income for renters on the Bangor area rose only 9% between 2001 and 2007. However, the median rental price for a two-bedroom apartment rose 44% during the same time frame.
**With rent and energy costs combined, Maine renters at poverty level have less disposable personal income than poverty level renters in any other state in the entire country.
**Maine has the 6th oldest rental housing stock in the nation, which means it is more likely to be substandard.

**There are over 3,000 households with substandard, inhumane living conditions in the Bangor area.

**As of the fall of 2008, Bangor was one of the five top localities with the highest foreclosure rates in the entire state of Maine.

**As many as 69% of all foreclosed units in New England have housed renters.

**Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor works with families trapped in substandard housing with incomes that are 30%-50% below the median household income level for the greater Bangor area.

**Selected, or “partner families,” work with volunteers to build their own home, and put in hundreds of “sweat equity” hours of labor, as part of their “payment” toward the home.

**Partner families buy the house from Habitat for Humanity, with a 0% mortgage, thus becoming home owners, with a hand up to a more decent standard of living.
