Our Mission: "In Response to Christ's Love, Lutheran Social Services of New England Serves and Cares for People in Need."

Our programs serve people in need regardless of background or belief, and we invite all people of good will to join us.

Description:
Lutheran Social Services of New England is part of the broad spectrum of faith-based and secular nonprofit organizations that are increasingly called upon to share the human service responsibilities of society with local, state, and federal governments. We are guided by the belief that by serving the most vulnerable members of our communities, we serve the whole community and create a more positive future for everyone.

Our programs serve people in need regardless of background or belief, and we invite all people of good will to join us.

LSS is a member of Lutheran Services in America (www.lutheranservices.org), a national network of Lutheran social ministry organizations that together comprise one of the largest charitable organizations in the United States. Last year LSA affiliated agencies provided support to more than 6 million people, 1 out of every 50 people in the United States.

History:
With a history dating back to 1870, Lutheran Social Services of New England has quietly become one of the most significant, stable and experienced providers of social services in New England.

Lutheran Social Services had its beginnings more than 135 years ago, when local congregations reached out to orphaned immigrant children in their community and founded what was to become the first LSS program, an orphanage at Brook Farm. That powerful commitment to help our neighbors in need still guides us today. LSS serves people in need regardless of their background or belief. We seek to build each individual’s self respect. We seek to help people grow in making responsible choices for themselves. We seek to eliminate chronic dependencies, by first making it possible for persons to become independent, and then to recognize the interdependence of us all.

LSS programs can now be found in more than 50 communities throughout England, serving more than 5,000 individuals a year through innovative programs like the Good News Garage, LSS Deaf Services Programs, and Creative Living.
