Literacy Volunteers/Southeastern Fairfield County, Inc.

To promote and actively advocate literacy.
To offer direct literacy services to adults whose personal goals may be achieved by increasing their literacy in the English language.
To identify the adult literacy needs in our communities and to meet those needs, through a variety of programs, by providing trained volunteer tutors and other educational services.

Description:
Literacy Volunteers/Southeastern Fairfield County, Inc. (LV/SFC)teaches adults to read, write and/or speak English. We work with those adults who have the lowest skills-those below the fifth grade level. If the learners do not speak English as their first language,LV/SFC works on conversational English. The learning takes place in small groups or one on one.

LV/SFC trains and supports volunteers to teach either Basic Literacy (BL) or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). The training programs take place over a period of 4 - 6 weeks. After the training, the volunteers are matched with one or more learners
to meet on a day and time that is convenient for both the tutor and learner. Tutors and learners work together for two hours per week. Tutors must speak English clearly and be clearly understood.

History:
LV/SFC,which has been active in Fairfield County since 1976, has helped thousands of area residents learn to speak and read English.

Our learners come from foreign countries and from within the USA. Most are employed. Some have been on welfare for most if not all of their lives. Some hold high school diplomas that they cannot read. Others hold high level degrees from colleges in their native countries, yet struggle with learning the English language.
