Christian Community Action, Norwalk, Inc.
Christian Community Action, Norwalk, Inc. (CCA) is a nonprofit, nonsectarian agency that works to provide food, furniture, financial assistance, and other necessities to people in need who are living in the greater Norwalk area.
Description:
As unemployment remains a problem and federal and state welfare laws leave more people in need, the number of families and individuals receiving food has doubled in the past 3 years. Currently we serve approximately 100 families and individuals each week, giving out about 400 bags of groceries per week. The food pantry is open Monday-Friday, from 9:30-12:00. Scheduling is flexible and is generally one day per week. In addition to a Food Pantry, CCA offers furniture, camp scholarships, a Christmas Gift of Giving program, a new mattress program for children and ESL classes for adults. CCA also distributes hundreds of gently used books to children each month.
History:
CCA was incorporated as a non-sectarian organization in 1974 by a group of concerned citizens who saw the need to provide food for the needy in Norwalk and surrounding towns. A food pantry was opened in a building on the grounds of St. Paul's on the Green Episcopal Church in Norwalk. Soon more space was needed as well as a presence in South Norwalk, NEON, Norwalk's community anti-poverty agency gave us space in their facility. When NEON built a new facility, CCA moved with them to our present location at 98 So. Main Street, in what is called the South Norwalk Community Center.
