The mission of America SCORES Denver is to empower students in urban communities using soccer, writing, creative expression, and service-learning. With teamwork as the unifying value, America SCORES Denver inspires youth to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged students, and become agents of change in their communities.

Description:
We focus our programs in schools that rank lowest in terms of student achievement and economic indicators and have little or no other after-school enrichment programs. America SCORES Denver currently serves over 200 children in eight public elementary schools in west Denver. More than 90% of SCORES’ students qualify for free or reduced lunch plans.

Our program is like no other in ► providing 20 weeks curriculum-guided programming, 5 days per week, at minimal cost to families, for the children in greatest need; ► utilizing a teamwork based model that translates success on the soccer field into achievements in the classroom; ► addressing both children’s academic and physical health needs; ► hiring public school teachers as writing and soccer ‘coaches’; and ► effectively enhancing parental involvement and the community-wide network of communication and connection.

History:
Incorporated in Colorado, America SCORES Denver was developed as one of the first affiliates of America SCORES, our highly successful national office. America SCORES Denver receives training, administrative and publishing services from our national office, but all of our fundraising is done locally.

Since inception, America SCORES Denver has demonstrated steady and managed growth of our highly innovative after-school programs which now serve over 250 low-income students annually in West Denver. ASD began providing a school-based after-school soccer and creative writing program in the fall of 1999 in six Denver public elementary schools. Since that time we have increased the number of schools and children we serve; we currently provide our programming in eight elementary schools in West Denver.
