Colorado Legal Services- - CO - Denver
The mission of Colorado Legal Services is to provide meaningful access to high quality, civil legal services in the pursuit of justice for low income persons and members of vulnerable populations throughout Colorado.
Description:
Colorado Legal Services (CLS) is a private, non-profit agency. There are fifteen offices located throughout Colorado. Based on income eligibility, CLS provides free legal services. Clients are represented in civil, not criminal, legal areas. These areas are grouped into specialized substantive units. Each unit sets caseload priorities based on community and client needs, mainly defending a client from actions that threaten the client's ability to fulfill his or her basic human needs.
History:
Colorado Legal Services was formed in October 1999 when three separate legal services programs in Colorado merged. The program in the Denver area was formerly known as the Legal Aid Society of Metropolitan Denver and was founded in 1925. At present, CLS in Denver mainly receives funding through the National Legal Services Corporation (funded by the U.S. Congress), Mile High United Way, Colorado Lawyer Trust Account Funds, the Legal Aid Foundation (a community fund-raising organization) and the Denver Regional Council of Governments. Additional funds come from various counties or cities and private donations. Financial eligibility is based on nationwide poverty guidelines set by the federal government, and approved by the CLS Board with local adjustments.
