St. Francis Center envisions a world where all people are treated with respect and dignity. St. Francis Center seeks to manifest God's love by serving those in need and allowing them the dignity and grace to choose their own path in life. We do this so that all who need a home, will have one; all who need sustainable income are able to obtain it; all who need healthcare, can access it. Ultimately, St. Francis Center's vision is to lessen the negative effects of homelessness on people and to advocate for societal change to end homelessness.
Description:
St. Francis Center is a daytime shelter for the homeless and needy. We are available to our guests for hospitality and conversation, as well as to provide access to a number of services including a social worker, a mental health counselor, employment counseling, and a medical nurse. In addition, the center serves as a place where guests (men and women both) can take showers for free and have their postal mail and messages received here. Local phone calls are also made available for guests via 5 guest telephone lines arranged throughout the room. Beginning in December of 2007, St. Francis Center is extending its hours of operation to provide services until 7pm! This means that we have a number of new volunteer times and we need your help to fill them.
History:
St. Francis Center was started in 1983 by Fr. Bert Womack, an Episcopal priest as a response to seeing an increasing number of people losing their jobs and housing. We have been serving this population ever since, trying to provide the basic needs for people living on the street or who find themselves not able to make ends meet.
