Buddy and Tutoring Programs

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on April 8, 2009

The greatest need for many of the children at The Children's Home is companionship with a trustworthy adult who will show that people do care. The Buddy Program meets on weekday evenings and visits can be scheduled at the convenience of the volunteer. Volunteer mentors from the community are paired with a child, and they spend an hour working on homework, playing games, or simply talking. Spending quality time with the child is the focus with the volunteer providing friendship and support for the child as they work through their treatment.

The Tutor Program is similar except that the volunteer and child focus more on helping with academics. There is no skill or previous experience necessary for any of these programs - just the ability to give up a little of your time for a child. Orientation and on-going training and supervision and support are provided for the volunteer.

There are also numerous volunteer opportunities during school hours at The Learning Center.

In whatever way you wish to help, we will work to be flexible to your schedule and skills.

Each volunteer will be interviewed and screened according to the requirements of the State of Connecticut. Volunteers will then be trained and matched with a child to work with by the Volunteer Coordinator. The Volunteer Coordinator also provides on-going supervision and coaching for the Volunteer with an eye toward creating a successful experience for both the Volunteer and the child. Throughout the year, various in-services and trainings will be offered for the continuing education of volunteers.
