The mission of Salem CyberSpace (SC) is to help low-income and unemployed individuals and families, as well as the organizations that serve them, to learn new computer skills to effect positive change for themselves, their families and their communities.
Description:
Salem CyberSpace has been committed, from the beginning, to the establishment of a community technology center shaped by articulated community need and supported by a broad base of community members and organizations. Thus, Salem CyberSpace established a steering committee consisting of other community organizatins that continues to assist in the creation of program content, and strategic direction. We employ different types of programs to be able to reach out to many different age groups and types of learners. Some of these programs include instructor-led classrooms, self-paced tutorials, workshops, and an on-going after-school program. Adult programs have four components:
- 20 hours of free Internet and computer access for the public including self-tutorials.
- 10 different beginner, intermediate and advanced classes in English and Spanish
- Collaborative adult programs offering custom workshops for the clients of area non-profits
- TechWorks -- offering custom computer staff-training for area non-profits
CyberYouth, our after-school program, is both an educational and arts program, which fosters academic improvement, technical skills, teamwork and leadership skills. To accomplish our objectives we offer 3 programs designed to reverse the negative trends seen in the poor testing results and low graduation rates for Hispanic youths in the public schools and to put these youth on a course to college and professional careers:
- Academic Improvement -- CyberYouth staff work hard to create an environment where academic excellence is expected and celebrated. Staff, volunteers and peers help our youth with homework and provide math tutoring for those children in need.
- Academic Enrichment -- Based on an innovative Digital Arts curriculum, CyberYouth provides a fun, non-threatening and creative environment in which to learn about technology as a tool. Projects (e.g. web design, digital video/photography, music, graphic design) are both individual as well as team-based.
- Career Planning -- we actively engage the youth in discussions about college as an important step to professional jobs in an increasingly technology-based employment market. For the older children (grades 8 and 9), job internships are available.
