Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on December 31, 2008

Our primary service at Samaritans is our hotline. We offer a 24 hour service as well as our teen line, which operates daily from 3-9pm. Our volunteers are trained to "befriend" individuals who are in despair, suicidal and/or in crisis. "Befriending" is non-judgmental, compassionate, active listening. We do not offer advice or problem solve. We listen to the caller and offer empathy and support. Our services are confidential within the organization and the caller has the option to remain anonymous. Our work is about prevention, not intervention.

Prospective volunteers must participate in an application process. Volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization. We ask that our volunteers be compassionate, caring people with the ability to listen to individuals who may be in a great deal of pain. We offer an extensive, 30 hour training program. Adult volunteers must be able to complete this training as well as commit to one, 4 hour shift a week and one overnight a month. Teen volunteers must be able to complete this training as well as commit to a 3 hour shift a week. Following their training, volunteers commit to volunteering for 9 months. We offer a great deal of support and on-going training.
