Tutors may assist teachers in class or work individually or with a small group outside class. Approaches vary: tutors may review classwork, bring in their own materials or work on something of the student's choosing like a letter to a landlord or studying for the Citizenship Exam. They may provide an English student with conversation practice or help a GED student with math or mastering the GED essay. Tutors receive training and ongoing support from the Tutoring Coordinator as well as the teachers.
Our school is an international community with students from many different countries and walks of life. Tutors can develop a warm, and in some cases, mentoring relationship with students. One volunteer expressed her experience this way: "I think the most exciting part of tutoring is getting to know the students. They have a lot to teach us too, most especially about facing the stresses of life with warmth and humor."
Tutors should respect the many experiences and skills that adult students bring to their studies and be committed to learner-centered education. Previous experience in teaching and/or cross-cultural situations is helpful but not required. We provide our own free training for prospective tutors as well as on-going supervision. And we make every effort to place tutors in assignments that match their skills.

The ALP is located at the English High School on the corner of Williams and Washington Streets. It is easily accessible from the Orange Line Green Street T Station. Exit the station on the right-hand side and go right on Amory Street. Follow Amory Street one block until the "T" intersection with Williams Street. The English High School is across the street. Enter through the main doors and look for our office on the right side of the main lobby.
