Overall, the ALAC provides educational programs (school-based and community-based), community outreach and uses research, and advocacy as its tools for creating a healthier community.
History:
For over 100 years, the American Lung Association has served residents by increasing public awareness on lung health issues. The oldest non-profit organization in Orange County, the American Lung Association began as the “Society for the Prevention and Treatment of Tuberculosis.” With tuberculosis sweeping through communities, ravaging old and young alike, concerned citizens met in the auditorium of Santa Ana High School in 1909 to determine what they could do to fight against the deadly disease. Looking to curb the spread of the “white plague,” the leading cause of death at the time, the organization pressed for community action, health education, the establishment of sanitariums, the founding of public health departments, and tuberculosis research. During the 1960s and 1970s, the work of the Association began to reflect growing concern with other lung diseases such as emphysema, asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer, influenza, and pneumonia. In 1969, the name was officially changed to the American Lung Association.
