READ/Orange County
Agency Details:
The mission of READ/Orange County is to create a more literate community by providing diversified services of the highest quality to all who seek them.
Description:
We train volunteer literacy tutors to teach adult learners to read and write in English.
Our Core Program provides no-cost, direct one-to-one or small group tutoring in reading and writing to adults requesting these services. Lessons are individualized, confidential, and highly goal-oriented. Tutors structure the learning process around the goals of the learner, using materials that relate to those goals.
In support of the Core Program, READ/Orange County offers three programs: Families For Literacy (FFL), Working For Inmate Literacy Now (WIN), and English Language and Civics Education (EL Civics).
History:
READ/ORANGE COUNTY was implemented in 1991 by a grant from the California Library Services Act (CLSA), which provides decreasing funding over a five-year period to libraries wishing to establish an adult literacy services program. READ/OC has been successful in gaining the support of the community and is now funded principally by the OC Public Libraries, as well as by State, Federal, foundation and private grants, and gifts.
READ/OC provides services in all communities served by the 33 branches of the OC Public Libraries, as well as the cities of Orange, Anaheim, and Santa Ana, a service area of over 1.3 million residents.
