Creative Identity
Creative Identity’s mission is to assist in improving the quality of life for our clients with disabilities through participation in music and the expressive arts by providing the therapeutic and educational interventions that increase independent thinking, self-initiative, daily living skills, work related skills, as well as assisting individuals in the expansion of their creative potentials and the development of personal and social responsibility.
Description:
Creative Identity's clients participate in a variety of music and arts experiences focused on maximizing one’s potential by addressing individual goals, as determined by staff therapists and caseworkers. Our visual arts program includes painting, ceramics, photography, video arts, computer arts, and silk painting. The clients participate in comprehensive array of music therapy services, including songwriting, ensembles, music theory, ear training, and music lessons. Furthermore, the facility offers training in life skills, exercise, nutrition, computer skills, gardening, theater, language arts, crafts, and academic skills. Within these interdisciplinary experiences, the clients' goals are addressed in the following domains: social, cognitive, behavioral, emotional, academic, communication, and gross/fine motor functioning. The organization’s objective is to target skills that will lead each individual to his/her highest level of independence and achieve a more active presence within the community.
History:
In 1996, George Gilliam, a Registered Music Therapist, founded Creative Identity, a music and creative-arts therapy-based day program that serves 30 adults with intellectual disabilities in Anaheim, CA. Additionally, the organization has a mobile program, Creativity Travels, which serves 5 clients in various group homes. The organization operates under the principle that all individuals innately possess talents and skills that serve as powerful vehicles for self-exploration and empowerment. Creative Identity provides its clients with the opportunity to enhance the community via musical performances, visual arts, dance, spoken word, and ceramics. Clients also earn commissions from the sales of their artwork via Creative Identity's “Art Works” pre-vocational program. Recognized as a community leader, Creative Identity was the recipient of the prestigious Disneyland Resort's Community Service Award. Executive Director George Gilliam was a 2007 and 2008 nominee for the Regional Center of Orange County’s Spotlight Award, honoring the outstanding achievements and extraordinary service of people dedicated to improving the lives of people with developmental disabilities in Orange County.
