Patient/Family Services Volunteer

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on May 26, 2009

Patient Services volunteers work with our interdisciplinary team to help provide emotional support for the patients and families on our service. These volunteers make friendly visits patients in their homes and in skilled nursing facilities, and participate in a variety of activities to help support patients in the end stages of life and their loved ones. We are always looking for caring people to add to our support team!

Some examples of projects are:
• playing guitar, singing songs, or reading to patients
• sitting quietly with a patient who doesn’t want to be alone
• engaging in life review with the patient by listening to, and sometimes documenting, a patient’s life stories
• participating in activities involving arts and crafts with patients
• providing relief sitting for tired and worn-out family members and caregivers

At Hospice Care, the most important thing our volunteers need to possess is a desire to help with care and compassion. Patient and Family Visitor volunteers should be great listeners, have a strong comfort with death and the dying process, and able to document work clearly and concisely. We ask for a minimum weekly commitment of one hour per week for one year. Patient and Family Visitor volunteer training is eight hours long and can be completed on two Saturdays, or during the week. Additional training throughout the year may be required, and all volunteers will need to attend additional training inservices. Patient and Family Visitor volunteers must be eighteen or older.
