Olmsted Community Action Program

Our mission is to partner with the community to build opportunities for families and individuals to achieve economic self-reliance. Our goal is to work with low-income citizens to achieve a stable income, build assets, obtain services they are eligible for and assist in connecting them with community resources.

Description:
We have turned hope into reality for low-income households. We have enabled many local residents to help themselves, and in turn, help others. While our programs are designed to help low-income people, they improve communities for all citizens. Olmsted Community Action Program has served many families in the past year by providing services that helped them with stable income, complete applications for benefits, save for their future, stay in their homes and providing information to the community. We have a Family Assets for Independence in Minnesota program which assists low income consumers to save for a home purchase or tuition and books for further education. The money saved must be earned income and up to $40 a month is matched 3:1. The Family Homeless Prevention Program assists with one month's rent to those who are at risk of homelessness. We work closely with Minnesota Family Investment Program participants who are disabled and cannot work. Olmsted Community Action Program assists with the Social Security Insurance application process. There is a statewide effort to provide application assistance to citizens who would be eligible for health care and/or food support. In the past year, Olmsted Community Action Program provided information to almost 4000 individuals and families regarding community resources. That number increases to 8000 when outreach efforts are included.

History:
Community Action Agencies are nonprofit private and public organizations established under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 to fight America's War on Poverty. Community Action Agencies help people to help themselves in achieving self-sufficiency. Today there are approximately 1000 Community Action Agencies, serving the poor in every state as well as Puerto Rico and the Trust Territories.

Olmsted Community Action Program has been helping people and changing lives in Olmsted County for 26 years. We are the only public Community Action Program in the State of Minnesota. Community Action Agencies board of directors have a unique composition of at least one-third members from the low-income community, exactly one-third public officials and up to one-third members from the private sector. This composition provides a well rounded board with input from all areas of the community. Because our agency is governed locally, we provide a different mix of programs and services. Our grant funding allows our agency to be flexible to look at the needs of the community.
