The Reading Center

The Reading Center is a non-profit organization that unites with individuals, families, and our community to overcome the challenges of unexpected difficulties learning to read, write, and spell, which are associated with dyslexia. Through expertly trained educational therapists and a scientifically proven, time-tested approach, we build confidence, inspire hope, and enhance success.

Description:
We provide diagnostic and educational services to those who have and are affected by the specific learning disability of reading, writing, and spelling, which is also known as dyslexia. One of our goals is to train teachers in appropriate educational procedures, primarily based on the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching written language skills. We also wish to increase the public's awareness and understanding of language-based learning disabilities

History:
The Dyslexia Institute of Minnesota, also known as the Reading Center, was established in the late 1940's through the efforts of Mrs. Paula Rome. She studied with her uncle, Dr. Paul Dozier, a neuro-psychiatrist and pioneer in the field of learning disorders who was professionally associated with Dr. Samuel T. Orton. Paula Rome herself became a pioneer in the field of language learning disorders, as did Jean Smith Osman when she joined Mrs. Rome in 1951. The two co-wrote The Language Tool Kit and the Advanced Language Tool Kit, internationally recognized texts for teaching those with dyslexia. They also founded the Upper Midwest Branch of the Orton Dyslexia Society (now known as the International Dyslexia Association - Upper Midwest Branch). Through the last 55 years, thousands of people have come to Rochester to be tested, tutored, and taught about the language learning disability known as dyslexia.
The Reading Center was incorporated as a 501(c)3 in 1989. In 1996 it became a participating agency of the United Way of Olmsted County. These funds are specifically targeted to subsidize services for those with financial needs. About 45 specially trained teachers are associated with the Reading Center, providing services to clients who are seeking understanding, knowledge, and educational help.
