It is the mission of the Federal Medical Center to protect society by confining offenders in the controlled environments of prison and community-based facilities that are safe, humane, and appropriately secure, and to provide work and other self-improvement opportunities to assist offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens.

Description:
The health care mission of the Federal Bureau of Prisons is to provide necessary medical, dental, and mental health services to inmates by professional staff, consistent with acceptable community standards. The Federal Medical Center, Rochester, Minnesota, is responsible for providing inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and psychiatric care. This includes diagnosing and treating health problems of all kinds afflicting prisoners committed to the custody of the Attorney General of the United States and confined at the Federal Medical Center.

History:
The Federal Medical Center was formerly the Rochester State Hospital. In 1983, the Bureau of Prisons purchased the property from Olmsted County. The Federal Medical Center was officially dedicated in 1985. The Federal Medical Center recognizes the involvement of volunteers and contractors as vital to the correctional programs. The programs can improve an offender's quality of life in the institution and provide assistance in the reintegration into the community. The volunteers awareness of and involvement in programs helps the Federal Medical Center meet its mission.
