History:
The community of Rochester is extremely fortunate to have the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in its own backyard. Cancer patients travel from all over the world to receive their treatment at this facility and often face lengthy treatment, emotional distress and financial hardships while away from home, family and friends.

The Rochester Hope Lodge opened in 1999 as a 30 room facility instantly maintaining a waiting list of 30 or more patients each week, with an average wait of 12 days.

In May 2007 the Rochester Hope Lodge expanded its current location to 60 guestrooms, making it the Sandra J. Schulze American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, the largest in the country.

The American Cancer Society goal is to maintain the occupancy level at 85% with patient/guest satisfaction level at 100%. Reviewing the first ten years in operation, 2,778 cancer patients utilized the Hope Lodge facility, averaging 24 night’s per/patient/guest for a total of 66,672 lodging nights. Value/cost to the room is estimated at $45 per night.

At Hope Lodge, cancer patients and their loved ones are armed with the vital information to help them make informed decisions. Guests at The Sandra J. Schulze Family American Cancer Society Hope Lodge are primarily residents of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Other guests reside in Alaska, Arkansas, California, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Hope Lodge has an economic impact for patients as the lodging is free, and a more salutary “quality of life” impact for patients and families as staff and volunteers lend support, information and other palliative services. In our survey of patients and families who stay with us we have learned that a significant proportion could not afford to seek their prescribed treatment if Hope Lodge did not exist.
