Description:
Hiawatha Homes Foundation, Inc. was created in 1983 as an agency whose mission is to financially support community services, including residential facilities administered by Hiawatha Homes, Inc. These services include a broad array of educational, medical, rehabilitative, psychological, and therapeutic programs for persons of all ages with severe developmental disabilities and the sometimes-related conditions of being medically fragile and physically challenged. Hiawatha Homes Foundation supports this charitable mission of Hiawatha Homes, Inc. by soliciting, managing and disbursing funds to meet the needs of the clients served by Hiawatha Homes.

The Department of Human services and the Department of Health to provide residential care and family support services for people with developmental disabilities license Hiawatha Homes, Inc., a local non-profit community-based agency. Hiawatha Homes' expertise is geared toward serving people with mental retardation, dual diagnosis, traumatic brain injury, and related conditions such as autism, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy.

History:
Hiawatha's residential support services were first established in 1976 with the Valkyrie Home, a large facility designed to serve up to 43 people. In 1985, Hiawatha began to expand its residential service by establishing typical homes for up to four people each in neighborhoods throughout Rochester. Today, Hiawatha provides support to 90 people at 20 locations in the greater Rochester area.
