Rochester Civic Theatre produces 6 main stage musical and drama performances per year. In addition, we produce 2 family orientated shows per year. Rochester Civic Theatre also has a comprehensive education program that includes the nine month Theatre Academy program that runs concurrent to the school year plus a series of two week theatre camps in the summer. For over 20 years, Rochester Civic Theatre is proud to maintain one of the longest continually running sexual abuse awareness and education programs of its kind in the state. Our Touch and No Easy Answers troupes present over 80 performances each year, educating children in the areas of good and bad touch, date rape, incest and proper and improper behaviors. More then 20 volunteers, working in rotating troupes, staff our programs. These dedicated individuals take time from their daily work schedules to donate their talents to teaching our young people tat they have the right to personal protection and that there are places for them to turn for help and guidance
History:
Rochester Civic Theatre began in 1951 when a group of theatre enthusiasts known as the “Log Cabin Players” each contributed $10 of their own money to produce Moss Hart’s Light Up the Sky. The show was a success, netting a profit of $175, and the Theatre was formally incorporated later that year and began producing a 3-show season on a budget of approximately $300 a year. Community support for the newly named Rochester Civic Theatre remained strong. On the basis of that success a fundraising project was begun in 1961 to provide better facilities than the makeshift, abandoned warehouse the Theatre had occupied for a decade. With solid support from its patrons and the City of Rochester, and spurred on by a fire which severely damaged their existing facilities, a new 307 seat, air-conditioned theatre was constructed, opening to a production of South Pacific in December of 1964. The growth of Rochester Civic Theatre continued through the 60’s and 70’s as the Theatre doubled the number of annual productions from three to six. Theatre-based classes were offered to the community; education outreach was begun and in 1983 Rochester Civic Theatre began targeting programming of family productions under the banner of Young People’s Theatre.
