Advocate for Landlord/Tenant Hot Line

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on September 14, 2009

Many people contact the landlord and tenant hot line everyday. There are various types of matters, most of which require a short explanation of the landlords' and tenants' responsibilities. A common question is, "Do I have to give a 30-day notice prior to moving out?" This requirement is often misunderstood as "Proper Notice" is actually one rental period plus a day. In explaining the answer, more often than not, people will say "isn't that 30 days". Well no, in fact, if you are giving your notice in February for example, that month usually has only 28 days. And therefore, your proper notice would only be 28 days plus a day, instead of the 30 days. This is only one example of the common questions that advocates receive daily. Often times the calls can be answered simply enough, other times the calls need to be referred to various agencies.

AGE OF VOLUNTEER: 18 and older. COMMITMENT: flexible. DAY OF WEEK: flexible, as needed. TIME OF DAY: flexible, as needed. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Advocate training, written materials and ongoing assistance are provided free of charge by Legal Assistance of Olmsted County attorneys and staff.
