Volunteers help low-to-moderate income and elderly individuals prepare their tax returns so that they can receive a credit and/or refund to which they are entitled. During the 2008 filing season, over 2,256 taxpayers were assisted in Olmsted and Dodge Counties returning back to these tax filer over $1,000,000 in credits and refunds. As a Tax Preparer volunteer, you will commit to volunteer at least one four hour time slot each week for ten weeks between February 1 and April 15. Returns are completed using the computer. Individuals in this position find it very rewarding and enjoy helping individuals who need help. Tax sites include Hawthorne Education Center, The Senior Center, The Salvation Army, Stewartville Senior Center, and Dodge County.

AGE OF VOLUNTEER: high school graduate or older. COMMITMENT: a minimum of 40 hours between February 1 and April 1. 40 hour training required. DAY OF WEEK: flexible, Monday through Saturday. TIME OF DAY: flexible, your schedule, however, you need to commit to a four hour time slot. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Volunteers are required to study and attend a class on tax law and tax preparation using a computer. The training is about 40 hours, but may take longer the first year.
