The 2009 Science Fair will feature work by students from all District middle schools and high schools , Schaeffer Academy, Rochester Central Lutheran School, Holy Spirit School, and Saint Francis of Assisi School. Students will present their papers in the semi-final presentations from 3 - 6 and 6 -10 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17. Students will have 12 minutes to present their papers, followed by 6 minutes of questions form the judges. Finalists will present again on Thursday, February 19 from 6:30-10 p.m. Seven students will qualify to present their papers at the State Science Fair in St. Paul on March 29 - 31 at the Crown Plaza Motel. The public is invited to attend all paper presentations. February 19-20, students will present their projects. Judges will evaluate projects based on how well students follow the scientific method, the detail and accuracy of research, and whether experimental procedures were used in the best possible way. Judges also evaluate whether or not students can speak freely and confidently about their work. Students will go on to compete at the State Science Fair, and two students will advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Reno, Nevada on May 10 through the 15th. The local Science Fair will end with an awards ceremony on February 20 from 7-10 p.m. in the John Marshall High School Ilstrup Auditorium, 1510 14th Street NW. The public is invited to attend. This year's guest speaker is Dr. Lee Frelich from the University of Minnesota Department of Forest and Ecology who will speak about "Future Climates and Eco Systems of Minnesota" from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the Regional Sports Center.
