American Lung Association Of Nebraska
The American Lung Association is a non-profit, non-governmental, voluntary health organization dedicated to the prevention and control of lung disease and the promotion of respiratory health.
Description:
Our mission is met through programs and services for the 185,000 Nebraskans who have chronic lung disease, including: financial support of medical research-both in Nebraska and on a national level, aimed at finding the causes of, and cures for, lung disease; Camp Superkids-a summer camp for children with severe asthma; community outreach through education; educational materials and information concerning lung disease.
History:
Founded in 1904, The American Lung Association is the oldest voluntary health organization fighting specific diseases in the United States. The Nebraska chapter of the association was organized in 1907 to combat tuberculosis, the leading cause of death in the United State at the turn of the century. Primarily because of lung association efforts nationwide, an effective treatment program for tuberculosis was discovered and put into effect by the 1950s. Working with other groups and individuals, the association has effectively lowered the smoking rate among adults from nearly 50% in the 1960's to approximately 20% currently. The lung association has helped fund research producing vastly improved inhaled medications for people with asthma.
