Habitat for Humanity of Omaha Inc. is a non-profit, Christian-based organization of dedicated persons of all races and creeds. Habitat makes it all possible for people with very low incomes to purchase their own home. All homes are built or renovated through volunteer labor and tax deductible donations of money and materials.

Description:
Homes are built primarily using financial contributions, volunteer labor and donated materials. The families who partner with us are required to work 350 hours of "sweat equity" on the homes we are building. These hours are counted as part of the down payment. The home is then sold to the family using a zero-interest mortgage that is paid back to Habitat over the course of 20-30 years. The monthly payments are then used to build more homes. Habitat for Humanity of Omaha builds on average 15 homes per year. HFHO does not give homes away. We provide a resource to families who couldn't otherwise afford to purchase a home. It is a hand up, not a hand out.

History:
Habitat for Humanity International was founded by Millard Fuller in Americus, GA in 1976. He developed the idea of partnership housing with friends while living at Koinonia Farm in Georgia. Koinonia Farm was a self-sustained, integrated community founded by Rev. Clarence Jordan, author of the Cotton-Patch Gospels, that was committed to non-violence and economic sharing. Fuller participated in the solicitation of donations and no-interest loans from benefactors to get several decent houses built for Koinonia's tenant farmers. No one was to make a profit off of the building; from these humble beginnings Habitat For Humanity began.
In 1984, Omaha Habitat for Humanity was formed. Since that time, over 140 homes have been built in the Omaha area. Groups from churches, schools, corporations and other sectors of the city all participate in Habitat's work.
