The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is dedicated to funding research to find a cure for juvenile diabetes, which strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications.
Description:
Someone is diagnosed with juvenile, Type 1, diabetes every hour. It can and does strike adults as well. To stay alive, those with juvenile diabetes must test their blood at least 4 times a day and administer multiple injections. Even with insulin, juvenile, Type 1, diabetes usually results in a drastic reduction in quality of life and shortens the average life span by 15 years. Insulin does not cure diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating effects: kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputation, heart attack, and stroke. JDRF is the leading nonprofit, nongovernment funder of Type 1 research worldwide. JDRF structures its research on a business-world model to ensure that resources are spent in ways that accelerate progress toward finding a cure. JDRF is the only diabetes organization devoted totally to research. Through our influence with government and the research community, we leverage our money in ways that result in $2.5 billion going to Type 1 research annually. 85 cents of every dollar we raise goes directly to support research and research education. We are in need of volunteers to assist with day to day office activities as well as on both event committees, and the day of each event. Other committees for which we are also seeking volunteers are as follows: communications, fundraising, and government relations. The communications committee is responsible for all of our public relations efforts, the fundraising committee focuses on assisting the foundation in meeting its annual fiscal goal, and the government relations committee is the advocacy arm of JDRF. Advocates are needed to communicate on a regular basis with our representatives in Washington, D.C. To learn more about how you can make a difference in the search for a cure, call our office today!
History:
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was founded in 1970 by parent of children with diabetes. Since our founding, JDRF has contributed over $1.16 billion to diabetes research and continues to work toward the common goal of finding a cure for type 1 diabetes.
